Breakfast

Like many families across the country sharpening the pencil when writing a grocery list, when it comes to budgeting for our house, we are making it a science.  Often times in our jobs we are given a task that requires us to break down to the smallest detail of what a project would cost before and after we execute that task or roll out that new idea.  This kind of ROI(return on investment) strategy can easily work on the household breakfast budget.

Can you really serve up breakfast to a family of 4 for just $2.85 per day?  You bet,  and here is a how:

Pancakes!!!  Yep, that old stand by…  Take a bag of Krusteaz, add water only and for a family of 4, use 3 cups of mix, 2.25 cups of water, 5 minutes to cook and you’re done! Now I know you don’t want to eat plain pancakes everyday, so throw in some chocolate chips, maybe a banana, berries etc…  Compare the cost of a box of cereal(WOW!) and this is a legitimate alternative with little more prep time than getting a bowl and pouring the cereal and milk in.   You can get a bag of great pancake mix at Costco that will last you probably a month, if you make them a few times a week, and the bag may cost $8-like just about everything else at Costco-.

Look in my  house, our SIX kids can take down a bag of cereal a day-just the kids… So if I am buying “cheap” cereal, I am paying at least $3.50 a day, not to mention the half-gallon of milk used…Now I am over $4.50- in one day.  Pancakes over 30 days puts you at $85 for the month on Breakfast vs, $135 per month for Cereal.  That’s a 37% savings or $50 PER MONTH. I just found you some money for allowances, movie nights, play money, or a date night.  If you want to get serious about your food budget, this is a great start.
